Frequently Asked Questions

1. How is ThermaCote® different from traditional insulation materials?

ThermaCote® is a spray-applied ceramic coating, not a bulky insulation board or fibre-based roll. It goes on at 1 mm thickness, forming a seamless, breathable barrier that reflects up to 85% of radiant heat. It doesn’t require space-intensive installation or major building work, and it works on internal or external surfaces without compromising ventilation.

2. What surfaces can ThermaCote® be applied to?

ThermaCote® can be applied to almost any building surface, including brick, concrete, metal, timber, glass, plastics, roofing membranes, and HVAC ducting. It’s used across residential, commercial, and industrial settings, including on structures where conventional insulation can’t be used due to limited access, aesthetics, or moisture risk.

3. Is ThermaCote® safe for use indoors and in homes?

Yes. ThermaCote® is non-toxiclow-VOC (<6 g/L), and MAS Certified Green™, meeting stringent indoor air quality standards like California Section 01350. It’s also Class A fire-rated (Gross Heat of Combustion 1.91 MJ/m²), making it safe for both domestic and commercial interior applications.

4. How long does ThermaCote® last, and does it need maintenance?

ThermaCote® has a long service life. Internally, it is often permanent unless damaged. Externally, it may require recoating, but not for a long time; applications from the 1980s are still performing, depending on climate exposure and surface wear this may vary. It remainsUV-resistant, crack-resistant, and flexible, reducing the need for frequent maintenance.

5. Can I apply ThermaCote® myself, or do I need a specialist?

ThermaCote® must be applied by trained professionals using airless spray equipment. This ensures the correct build-up, adhesion, and performance. The UK team offers access to a network of approved applicators, and training is available for contractors who wish to become certified.
